Erasmus+ Visit to the University of Jaén

10-07-2025

During this visit, the lecturers Mindaugas Kavaliauskas and Raminta Vengalytė had an excellent opportunity to expand their knowledge and experience in language test design and validation. The course lasted two weeks and focused on both theoretical foundations and practical applications.

In the first week (from June 16th to June 20th), participants attended theoretical sessions. They explored various frameworks and theories related to language testing.

On the first day, Joaquín Cruz led a session on the definition of a language test. He introduced key terminology and discussed previous research on the topic.

On the second day, Brian North and Adolfo Sánchez presented on mediation and assessment, highlighting the challenges associated with these areas.

On the third day, Javier Fruns spoke about reading comprehension and demonstrated how artificial intelligence can be used to adapt authentic texts to different proficiency levels.

On the fourth day, Carmen Álvarez introduced oral and written production and explained the implementation of grading protocols using assessment scales.

On the final day of the week, David Bradshaw gave a presentation on listening comprehension and the development of PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment).

The second week (from June 23th to June 27th), focused on practical application. Joaquín Cruz introduced participants to the software tools SPSS, Winsteps, and Facets, which are used to test and measure the validity and reliability of language tests using Classical Test Theory and Item Response Theory.

Of course, the two weeks were not only about work—lecturers also had the chance to explore the local culture. They enjoyed sightseeing in Jaén, visiting Saint Catherine's Castle (Castillo de Santa Catalina), The Cathedral of the Assumption (Catedral de la Asunción), and the Arab Baths.
