Building Connections for Stronger Regional Research:
On April 13–15, Dr. Magnus Kristoffersson (Örebro University, Sweden), leader of Work Package 5 (Increasing Regional Research Impact) within the NEOLAiA European University Alliance, visited Šiaulių valstybinė kolegija / Higher Education Institution (ŠVK). The visit was not just a formal meeting – it was an opportunity to better understand each other’s strengths and explore how collaboration within NEOLAiA could be made more meaningful and impactful.
Throughout the visit, ŠVK researchers shared insights into the projects they are currently working on. Their presentations reflected a strong focus on applied research and real regional needs. One of the key highlights came from Dr. Simona Skėrė, who introduced the institution’s ongoing collaboration with businesses. Her presentation showed how research at ŠVK is closely connected to industry, addressing practical challenges and contributing directly to innovation in the region.
A central theme of the discussions was how Work Package 5 could support ŠVK researchers in expanding their international networks. Finding the right partners is often one of the biggest challenges in research, and this is where WP5 aims to make a real difference. Dr. Magnus Kristofferson presented the activities of WP5, focusing on tools and initiatives designed to help researchers connect, collaborate, and grow together across the alliance.
One particularly interesting moment was the introduction of an AI-based tool developed to help researchers find potential collaborators more easily. This tool opens new possibilities for building partnerships within NEOLAiA, making it simpler to match research interests and start joint initiatives.
Beyond meetings and presentations, the visit also included time to attend International Staff Week activities, such as PR & Communication network discussions, and experience ŠVK’s environment firsthand. Dr. Magnus Kristoffersson explored the Health Care as well as the Business and Technology faculties, where he was introduced to their facilities and equipment. Getting a closer look at the practical side of ŠVK’s work added another layer to the visit, highlighting the institution’s strong capacity for applied research and hands-on learning.
Overall, the visit felt like a meaningful step forward. It strengthened connections, sparked new ideas, and laid the groundwork for future collaboration. Most importantly, it reinforced a shared goal – working together within NEOLAiA to increase the impact of research in regions and beyond.
